Thanks to Staff Reporter Michelle we are able to share two more Heartless reviews from the Sitges Film Festival. Sadly Heartless did not receive an award at the festival. You can read the entire list of Oficial Fantàstic winners here.
From Corridor Style Films, “This one definitely got a thumbs up from us. A strange and dark tale of a disfigured loner who enters into a Faustian pact with the devil in exchange for the thing that will make him happiest, but ultimately everything is not as straightforward as it seems. An excellent performance from Jim Sturgess is almost overshadowed by brief cameos from Joseph Mawle as The Devil and the always excellent Eddie Marsan as The Weapons Man.”
And translated from the French website, DVD Drama, “The depth nestled behind film genre conventions has never been as brilliant since Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko: style is less foiled because Ridley has experience and knows to not committing errors. It is his revival, and Heartless is a beautiful look at damnation. Ridley is not misled by choosing young Jim Sturgess, convincing end to end, who translates the melancholy of a post-adolescent whose skin has been covered with a birthmark, passing on the side of the freaks. This is a matter of chance and destiny: if it had not been for this indelible mark, he would not have had the same life, could have had a girlfriend and would not be obscured by his appearance.”
And finally, we are pleased to announce Heartless will be part of the 23rd Leeds International Film Festival, with the film being presented at 6:30pm on November 7th. You can read the details about the screening here.
